Impact Stories: Case Studies from Tanzania, Bolivia, Cambodia, and Beyond

The true measure of Dr. Stout’s leadership is reflected in the lives transformed through CGI’s projects. In Tanzania, CGI’s primary country partner, Dr Stout, helped to found a kindergarten for children orphaned due to being HIV+.

The program was officially approved by the Tanzanian Ministry of Education in 2005. They are using education as a basis for developing resilience in those children, as well as those providing healthcare in the neighboring clinic/hospital. CGI developed programs for local nursing students in collaboration with local doctors, nurses, and staff, with a particular focus on counseling people with HIV infection and AIDS.

CGI works with the Huruma Designated Hospital in the Kilimanjaro Region of the Rombo District. The primary illnesses of patients in our hospital are Malaria, T.B, Pneumonia, Immunosuppression, Diabetes, and Hypertension. The programs stemmed from a personal relationship Dr. Stout has with a guide he met while on a climbing trip there, and pre-dated the Center’s start, and were the catalyst for CGI coming into being.

CGI has also consulted on managing the emotional health problems that some of the nursing students who came to the Huruma Hospital for practical training were experiencing, again with my tutorial coaching notes and sending copies of materials suitable for group and individual use.

CGI’s philosophy for the projects it works on is to continuously be a free consultant; CGI eschews “ownership” of any projects, and rather serves to help incubate them, greenhouse them, and then launch them. CGI remains available if needed ever-after. 

In Cambodia, CGI spearheaded efforts to address the mental health needs of impoverished rural populations, working alongside NGOs and local health ministries. These projects not only delivered critical care but also built lasting infrastructure by empowering local practitioners and integrating mental health services into primary care systems.
