Vivek Chhabra: A Resilient Leader Innovating at the Intersection of 6G, Automotive, Satellite, Physical AI, Semiconductors, Software, and Cloud Transformation with an Eye on the Space Ecosystem as the Next Frontier

Vivek Chhabra | CEO and Founder | 21iQLabs

Innovation today isn’t about how much you see, but how you focus. Having access to cutting-edge technology is like having perfect 20/20 vision; it’s a powerful tool, but useless if you don’t know where to look. Real breakthroughs happen when we stop staring at the gadgets and start looking through a wider lens. Just as clear vision requires depth perception, modern progress demands interdisciplinary sight—the ability to connect ideas across domains. The bottleneck isn’t technology—it’s clarity. To innovate is to align perspective, turning capability into meaningful reality.

This is the lens through which Vivek Chhabra has built his career. As CEO and Founder of 21iQLabs, he operates at the intersection of telecom, mobile ecosystems, Physical AI, semiconductors, and cloud—but his focus is equally on the people shaping those systems. Through 21IQInnovation, a non-profit initiative he leads alongside his wife, Rekha Chhabra, and a team of passionate volunteers, overseeing behind-the-scenes execution and building key partnerships, he is working to close that gap early.

What began as a small initiative for his daughter has since evolved into a broader mission: teaching youth how to think, build, and innovate. The program moves beyond traditional subject-based learning, focusing on developing an entrepreneurial mindset and holistic skills that help propel the careers of next-generation leaders. Students build their own startups, learning finance, product management, and strategy through direct execution, with the core focus on building an entrepreneurial mindset. Through this journey, students develop 21st-century workforce readiness skills while receiving holistic mentoring that empowers them with the tools and confidence to succeed, regardless of the career path they choose.

Mentorship is structured to promote independence—students collaborate across teams without direct parental involvement, developing and executing ideas in real-world contexts. Through boot camps and institutional collaborations, the model continues to scale. The objective is consistent: equip young minds to connect ideas, create value, and lead in an increasingly complex world. His son, who is a successful software engineer, and many professionals who are mentors to this program have benefited tremendously.

Pioneering Global Management and Technology Transformation Across Leading Segments

Vivek’s introduction to technology began with curiosity, not instruction. As a child, he dismantled everything he could access—a VCR, a scooter, even his uncle’s car—driven by a single question: how do machines work? That instinct to take things apart and rebuild them would later evolve into a disciplined approach to engineering and innovation. He continues this even today to fix his house, automobiles, or anything he can open up by himself when he gets time.

Early exposure reinforced that curiosity. Visits to Pragati Maidan, where he encountered large-scale machines and emerging technologies, shaped his interest in engineering systems at a time when access to computing was still limited. He carried that interest into the Indian Institute of Technology, BHU, where he worked extensively on Linux kernels, beginning to understand both the mechanics and potential of software systems.

He began his career at the Centre for Development of Telematics (CDOT), contributing to SS7 signaling systems in India. Operating with the intensity of a startup, CDOT exposed him to building under constraint—delivering meaningful systems with limited resources in a highly demanding environment. The experience shaped his ability to navigate complexity without relying on scale.

At IBM Research, his exposure widened. He worked on early developments in Voice over IP protocols and Mozilla browser capabilities on IBM microprocessors—placing him at the intersection of emerging technologies and real-world systems. More importantly, this phase clarified a critical gap: innovation alone does not create impact unless it reaches the market.

His upbringing reinforced that realization. His grandfather introduced him early to the fundamentals of selling, while his father’s engineering background and his mother’s academic discipline created a balance between technical thinking and structured learning. Together, these influences led him to a clear understanding: building technology is only part of the journey—taking it to market requires a different skill set.

To bridge that gap, he pursued a master’s degree in management at NYU, integrating business strategy with technical expertise. He later applied this in Canada, where he helped build a startup creating one of the industry’s first chipsets and software platforms to launch a video camera phone with Samsung—translating innovation into market-ready products.

Leadership roles at Texas Instruments and Marvell Technology followed, where he helped build a mobile business from the ground up and contributed to the early Android ecosystem in collaboration with Google. These roles strengthened his ability to operate at scale, align global stakeholders, and build market-driven technology platforms.

With experience across more than 80 countries, he began to see a larger pattern—the convergence of technologies across industries. In 2016, he founded 21IQ Labs to build at that intersection, marking the next phase of his leadership.

Disruption, Convergence, and Human-Centric Tech

Vivek’s career spans multiple waves of technological change—from smartphones and 5G to AI-driven systems—but he does not define his work by domains.  At the core of his thinking is a simple principle: technology is not the outcome—it is the tool. Its value lies in how effectively it improves real-world experiences. This principle carries across domains—communication systems, connected devices, mobility—where he focuses on outcomes: efficiency, time saved, and measurable value.

Vivek’s focus is on contributing to disruption—identifying where new waves of technology can translate into meaningful change. His work in satellite communications reflects this approach. Rather than treating it as a standalone domain, he focuses on its convergence with automotive systems, drones, and other emerging technologies—where integration, not novelty, creates impact.

This application-first thinking extends beyond his corporate work. Through 21IQ Innovation, he teaches students to move beyond theory—building, testing, and learning through execution rather than memorization.

Across domains, his approach remains consistent: identify intersections, translate ideas into execution, and build systems that deliver real-world value. For him, the future of technology will not be defined by invention alone, but by the ability to apply it with clarity and purpose.

Ethics, Innovation, and Leading by Example

Vivek’s leadership was shaped by a series of moments that defined what he would—and would not—compromise on.

At CDOT, he saw early how small, focused teams could deliver what larger organizations often could not—reinforcing a belief that agility and clarity of purpose matter more than scale. That clarity was tested early. In one of his first roles, he joined a company with high expectations—only to realize within a day that it did not honor its commitments. He resigned the same day.

The decision was simple: he would not work in environments that compromised integrity.

His time at IBM T.J Watson Research Centre in NY further reinforced a pattern he had already begun to see: innovation has limited impact unless it is carried through to execution and market adoption. During this period, he also navigated constraints, including working under an H-1B visa. Rather than wait for flexibility, he created it—building PCs from home while continuing his professional work.

Bridging Strategy and Execution

Leading across global teams, Vivek learned early that strategy only works when it translates across cultures, contexts, and execution environments. He places strong emphasis on cultural context—recognizing that what works in one market often may not be successful in another. That awareness allows him to align teams without forcing uniformity.

His leadership is also defined by persistence. He pushes teams to maintain momentum, even in uncertain or constrained environments. As he puts it, “I don’t take no for an answer, typically”—a reflection of his bias toward solutions over constraints.

A defining strength is his ability to operate across levels—engaging with C-suite leaders and ecosystem partners while remaining closely connected to engineering teams. He values ideas based on merit, not hierarchy.

Vivek also emphasizes that ideas have limited impact unless they are understood and adopted. For him, leadership includes the ability to sell direction as clearly as it is defined. Communication underpins this approach. Clarity—of goals, roles, and expectations—is what enables consistent execution across teams and partners.

Turning Partnerships into Long-Term Alliances

Vivek approaches partnerships with clarity, empathy, and a strong sense of responsibility, especially when working with C-suite leaders across global ecosystems. He begins by focusing on the fundamentals—understanding what drives the other partner and identifying the challenges they face. He listens carefully, breaks down those challenges into clear terms, and evaluates how he can solve them effectively. For him, partnership requires insight, alignment, and a genuine commitment to outcomes. This perspective is further shaped by his engagement with global leadership networks such as 100Coaches.com, led by visionary coach Marshall Goldsmith, where he exchanges insights with executives across industries on leadership, decision-making, and ecosystem building.

He also recognizes the human side of leadership. Vivek observes that many C-suite leaders, despite their positions, often navigate uncertainty alone. He responds to this reality by building relationships that go beyond business discussions. He invests time in understanding their perspectives, supporting them professionally and personally when needed. This approach allows him to create trust that extends into long-term collaboration.

A defining aspect of his philosophy lies in honesty and accountability. Vivek does not hesitate to step back when he believes he cannot deliver the required outcomes. He states clearly, “If I believe that I cannot solve their challenges, I will tell them, work with somebody else, openly.” This level of transparency strengthens credibility and reinforces trust, even in situations where it may cost him an opportunity in the short term.

He prioritizes the success of his partners above immediate gains. Vivek believes that when partners succeed, the relationship grows stronger and mutual success follows naturally. He builds trust by aligning intent with action, ensuring that every engagement reflects integrity, clarity, and a long-term vision. His approach transforms partnerships into enduring relationships grounded in trust and shared purpose.

Balancing Intuition, Risk, and Execution

Vivek approaches high-stakes decisions in emerging technologies with a balanced blend of intuition, experience, and continuous learning. He does not rely on a single factor; instead, he connects insights from multiple inputs to arrive at clear, actionable decisions. He studies technology deeply, but he does not treat it as the only driver. He evaluates the human factor with equal importance, focusing on the strength of the team, their ability to execute, and their understanding of shared goals.

He believes that risk does not disappear, but leaders can manage it through clarity and structure. Vivek assesses whether a project can reach the market and whether the team understands what success looks like. He identifies critical path elements, evaluates dependencies, and actively works to de-risk execution at every stage. His approach remains grounded in discipline and intent, where each decision aligns with long-term outcomes rather than short-term excitement.

A key principle guides his thinking: “Technology will only solve 20% of your problems.” He recognizes that the remaining challenges lie in execution, adaptability, and external factors that often remain unpredictable. This understanding pushes him to stay agile and responsive, especially in fast-changing environments where delayed reactions can limit impact.

Vivek also invests time in staying informed. He reads extensively across domains, including emerging fields like Quantum computing, space, and robotics, and remains closely connected to global innovation hubs such as Silicon Valley.

Building Resilience Through Change

Vivek’s career reflects multiple challenging phases, but he does not define them as setbacks; he treats them as moments that reshape his thinking and strengthen his resilience. One of the most defining periods began when he moved to the United States, a decision he had not initially planned. He intended to stay in India, but an opportunity with IBM prompted him to relocate soon after his marriage. What started as a short-term move turned into a prolonged phase of uncertainty as he navigated immigration challenges, particularly delays in his green card process.

Instead of waiting indefinitely, Vivek made a decisive shift and moved to Canada after securing immigration there. This transition required him to rebuild his life and career in a new country once again. He carried only two suitcases, but more importantly, he carried a mindset that became central to his leadership philosophy. He reflects, “I came with two suitcases. I can walk away with two suitcases. So, it’s nothing to lose.” This belief removed fear from his decision-making and allowed him to focus entirely on effort rather than outcomes.

These experiences shaped how Vivek approaches both work and life. He draws inspiration from the Bhagavad Gita (a holy book of Hinduism), an internal guidance book of Hinduism, internalizing the idea of focusing on action without worrying about results. He has applied this consistently, whether he engages with top leadership or works closely with teams at different levels. His upbringing reinforces this mindset, as his mother encouraged him to act without fear of loss.

Vivek’s resilience comes from this clarity—he does his best, adapts to change, and remains open to learning. He does not hesitate to step into new environments or take on unfamiliar challenges, because he believes growth comes from continuous learning and fearless execution.

The Power of Perspective and Connecting Dots Across Domains

Vivek’s cross-industry and cross-country exposure shapes a mindset rooted in connection, clarity, and continuous innovation. Having worked across automotive, wireless, cloud, Software, semiconductors, and IoT, with full-stack experience while also navigating markets in India, Japan, Southeast Asia, Europe, China, and the United States, he developed a unique ability to see patterns where others see silos.

His exposure to different cultures sharpens his understanding of what drives each market. He studies how people think, how businesses operate, and what truly matters in each environment. This insight helps him identify opportunities that others often overlook. While many remain focused on day-to-day operations, Vivek steps back and views challenges from a broader lens. In one instance, a CEO tells him that he sees things others do not, reinforcing his strength in translating complex ideas into clear, actionable insights.

Vivek also focuses on simplicity in thinking. He believes innovation must remain accessible, and he consciously explains ideas in a way that even a young student can understand. This belief connects directly to his commitment to giving back. Through his high school innovation program, he dedicates time and resources to building future leaders who think critically, experiment boldly, and move beyond theoretical knowledge.

He emphasizes that real learning comes from experience and rigor, not just from books. He encourages students to question, explore, and create differentiation in everything they do. For Vivek, innovation must always deliver value—whether to individuals, businesses, or partnerships. This philosophy drives his approach, ensuring that every idea he pursues connects back to impact, relevance, and meaningful value creation.

Building Resilient and Innovative Teams

Vivek builds innovation and creativity within his teams by combining clarity, preparation, and accountability with a strong human-centered approach. He begins by ensuring that every team member understands the goal with absolute precision. He often frames this through a simple analogy—if a team aims to climb Mount Everest, they must clearly know each stage of the journey and what it takes to reach the summit. This clarity aligns efforts and allows individuals to focus on meaningful contributions rather than confusion or overlap.

He also prepares his teams for uncertainty. Vivek acknowledges that challenges, setbacks, and unexpected disruptions are inevitable in any innovation-driven environment. He encourages teams to anticipate these situations and remain ready to pivot when needed. He treats change as a constant, especially in startups and fast-evolving markets, and builds resilience into the team’s mindset from the outset.

Communication plays a central role in maintaining this balance. Vivek ensures that everyone stays on the same page, with clearly defined roles and responsibilities. This clarity creates accountability while allowing flexibility when unforeseen challenges arise. He values effort and intent, and he supports team members who demonstrate commitment, even when outcomes do not meet expectations.

At the same time, Vivek places strong emphasis on people. He believes that while roles can change, individuals who show a willingness to learn and work hard can achieve significant results. As he states, “anybody who has a good head on their shoulders, and is willing to learn, and willing to put in hard work, can conquer things.” This belief drives his approach to building teams that innovate while maintaining operational excellence.

Ecosystems, Excellence, and Execution

Vivek advises aspiring technology leaders to build a mindset that combines adaptability, discipline, and strong ecosystem thinking when aiming for global impact. He structures his guidance around a few clear principles that reflect his own journey and experience across industries and markets.

  • Embrace change and continuous learning: Vivek believes that the ability to adapt defines long-term success. He encourages leaders to learn from diverse experiences, markets, and cultures, and to remain open to new ideas.
  • Strive for excellence while building ecosystems: He emphasizes that no leader succeeds in isolation. Leaders must actively build networks—within their organizations, across partners, and among industry influencers. He urges them to create strong internal and external ecosystems that act as “sensors” to guide decisions, validate ideas, and accelerate execution. This interconnected approach strengthens both vision and delivery.
  • Practice financial discipline and frugality: Vivek highlights the importance of managing resources carefully. He advises leaders to spend only where necessary and to understand financial structures deeply. He notes that global operations involve hidden costs, including operational risks, delays, and opportunity costs, which many overlook. Without this awareness, even strong ideas can fail.
  • Build resilience through informed decisions: He cautions against taking shortcuts based solely on cost advantages. Leaders must evaluate execution risks, delivery timelines, and partner reliability. He has seen many startups struggle because they underestimate these factors and overestimate external promises.
  • Stay grounded in execution: Vivek reinforces that ambition must align with practical understanding. Leaders should question assumptions, validate capabilities, and ensure that every decision supports long-term outcomes.

Scaling Technology for Global Good

Vivek’s personal vision for the future of technology centers on one clear idea—how to take innovation from early adoption to mass impact. He draws consistent inspiration from the book Crossing the Chasm by Geoffrey Moore, which shapes how he thinks about scaling technology beyond niche users. He focuses on identifying how emerging technologies can move from limited access to widespread use, ensuring they solve real problems for individuals, businesses, and society at large.

He applies this thinking across multiple domains, always looking at convergence as the key to transformation. In connectivity, he explores how 6G can integrate with autonomous vehicles to create safer roads, reduce latency, and improve real-time decision-making. He sees high-speed connectivity as an enabler for systems to respond faster and operate more efficiently. He connects this with cloud computing, where distributed intelligence can lower costs and improve scalability.

In parallel, Vivek examines advancements in quantum computing and AI. He focuses on how stronger algorithms and agentic AI can enhance security, improve responsiveness, and support critical systems. He understands that as these technologies evolve, they must work together seamlessly. He visualizes ecosystems where semiconductors, AI platforms, and connectivity layers combine to deliver integrated solutions rather than isolated innovations.

He also extends this vision to robotics, satellites, and drones. He considers how global connectivity can allow machines to communicate, collaborate, and operate across borders with precision, creating next-human experiences. He reflects on how mobile technology evolved—from limited functionality to essential everyday tools—and uses that as a reference point for future transformations. Just as navigation shifted from physical maps to real-time digital guidance, he believes upcoming technologies will become invisible yet indispensable.

Vivek continues to anchor his vision in value creation. He evaluates how each innovation can reduce cost, improve access, and enhance everyday experiences. His focus remains clear—connect technologies, scale them effectively, and ensure they deliver meaningful impact at a global level—where technology is not just advanced, but applied with precision.

His eye is on getting involved in space technology as the next frontier beyond the impacts he has made recently in wireless, automotive, and education, among others. He continues his passion to combine all domain experiences and connect the dots to create more value for his clients, along with training the next generation for real-life skillsets through a non-profit.
