Kirsty Gordon: Crafting Authentic African Experiences with Heart and Purpose

In a world where curated travel often leans toward commercialism, Kirsty Gordon stands apart with a refreshing approach rooted in authenticity, purpose, and heart. As the founder of Anywhere in Africa Safaris, she leads a boutique, owner-run tour company based in Cape Town, creating tailored luxury travel journeys across Southern, East, and North Africa, as well as the Indian Ocean Islands.

Her story is one of passion, personal transformation, and a deep commitment to both people and place.

Defining Leadership through Empowerment

For Kirsty, transformational leadership begins with trust. She believes that real growth happens when team members are empowered to think creatively, take ownership, and solve challenges with fresh perspectives.

“I want my team to feel heard, to be bold in their ideas, and to take initiative in ways that support both business goals and customer experiences,” she shares.

Her marketing and social media team is a clear example of this mindset. Kirsty encourages open collaboration and constructive feedback, welcoming inventive strategies that enhance brand reach while staying aligned with the company’s ethos.

Early Roots of Independence and Innovation

Kirsty’s formative years were spent in the scenic town of George along South Africa’s Garden Route. Her childhood was filled with long hours on horseback, exploring forests and beaches with friends. This sense of adventure and freedom laid the foundation for her love of the outdoors.

However, life also presented challenges. Raised by a single mother after losing her father at a young age, Kirsty quickly developed a sense of responsibility. At just 14, she began sewing riding accessories like numnahs and chaps to help fund her equestrian pursuits. These early entrepreneurial steps not only supported her passion but also taught her the value of initiative and resourcefulness.

Later, she turned her riding skills into income by training difficult horses and eventually earned a teaching qualification in equestrian instruction. Horseback riding not only provided income between jobs but also instilled a tenacious, solution-driven spirit that still drives her today.

A Deep Connection to the African Wilderness

Kirsty’s first safari experience in the Okavango Delta of Botswana changed the course of her life. What began as a birthday invitation turned into a lifelong connection with Africa’s wilderness.

That trip ignited a passion not just for wildlife, but for the spirit and soul of the continent. It planted the seed for what would eventually become Anywhere in Africa Safaris, a company built to help others discover Africa’s magic in a meaningful way.

Delivering Travel with Purpose and Personal Touch

What makes Anywhere in Africa Safaris truly unique is its insistence on quality partnerships and personal experience. Kirsty ensures that most of the venues she recommends have been visited and vetted personally. She aligns the business with lodges and ground handlers who share the same commitment to sustainability, community development, and authentic connection.

“We may not be able to change all of Africa, but we can influence the circle around us,” she explains. “By choosing partners with the right values and encouraging our clients to travel with intention, we expand that circle and create ripples of positive change.”

Her philosophy centers on building lasting impressions—not just of luxury, but of impact.

The Power of Giving Back

For Kirsty, giving back is not a marketing tactic, but a central principle. “Actions speak louder than words. Travelers often ask how they can make a difference. We guide them toward organizations that genuinely need support and have direct community impact.”

Anywhere in Africa Safaris donates a portion of every booking to Elephant Havens, an NGO based in Maun. In addition, Kirsty connects clients with smaller nonprofits that often go unnoticed by large donor networks. This ensures contributions are meaningful, traceable, and locally impactful.

A Day in the Life

A typical day for Kirsty starts early. She arrives at the office by 7:30 to review emails and plan ahead before her team starts at 8:30. Much of her time is spent coordinating payments, handling supplier relations, and guiding client travel arrangements.

Afternoons are often filled with virtual consultations with international clients, particularly from the United States, discussing their wish lists, timelines, and travel dreams. As trips near departure, final details are refined and suppliers prioritized. After work, she winds down with a walk or run and enjoys evenings with her partner.

Looking Ahead with Optimism and Energy

Kirsty is thrilled to witness the resurgence of travel to Africa. With renewed interest in destinations like South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Kenya, Rwanda, and beyond, she sees more people becoming ambassadors for the continent.

“Travel to Africa is more than a vacation. It supports local economies, protects wildlife, and fosters global understanding,” she reflects.

Personally and professionally, Kirsty feels aligned with her purpose. Her love for Africa, for travel, and for people continues to grow. As the founder of a company built on relationships, intention, and integrity, she looks forward to shaping meaningful experiences for every traveler who chooses Anywhere in Africa.
